Sister Helen

Hi, my name is Sister Helen Huewe. I’m a Dubuque Franciscan. My mother was born in Dubuque on Central Avenue, then it was called Culver Avenue. She grew up in Holy Cross and later lived in Western Iowa and then returned here to her hometown after her dad died. Most of my life, I’ve lived in Dubuque. I entered the Dubuque Franciscans in 1955.

My major in ministry was in healthcare as a nurse and administrator. I would also say I’m a social justice advocate. Educating and speaking out for the immigrants, the Marshallese people and speaking out against violence and human trafficking. I also support climate change and sustainability efforts. I’m also a community organizer in some respects, involved in starting a number of organizations.
